Around Oswego

Our college neighbors the friendly small city of Oswego. Known as the Port City, Oswego rose to prominence because of its strategic location on Lake Ontario. Battles took place in Oswego Harbor during both the French and Indian War and the War of 1812. In the 1850s, Oswego was the fastest-growing city in New York state as its bustling docks became a vital link in trade routes supplying the blossoming country of America. You can still see its historic heritage in such landmarks as Fort Ontario on the east side of the city, the countless homes that preserve the elegance of past centuries, and downtown buildings that retain much of their 19th-century character.

In the 20th century, Oswego became a hub of energy production, recreation, and tourism. The natural beauty of the surrounding Oswego County, and its status as the trophy fishing capital of the Northeast, keeps visitors flowing through town year after year.

We encourage you to check out Oswego's fascinating museums, inviting downtown shops and eateries, and beautiful parks.

Beyond our county, SUNY Oswego is one of 35 colleges and universities in New York’s Creative Core, the central Upstate region that is emerging as a national leader in the new, green economy. Together, we’re creating ideas and new technologies, developing a highly skilled workforce and growing a new generation of energized leaders.
